I'm currently working as a Software Engineer in a gaming startup called Improbable. We have around 1000 people and are working to develop multiplayer tools which can help gaming studios develop games faster and cheaper.

What did you like most about studying Computer Science?

What I liked most was the ability to have hands on experience with just a computer. You can create pretty much anything you want, and it’s rewarding when you see your work come to life.

What did you go on to study or do after leaving Hockerill?

Computer Science at the University of Edinburgh.

What attracted you into a Computer Science profession?

Not only do I find it fun, I also like the culture in this field. People are usually very relaxed, flexible and also very smart. You’ll learn a lot and not feel stressed like you would in a lot of other professions.

What helped you getting to where you are now?

Throughout university I made sure to participate in as many extra-curricular activities as possible. Not all of them have to relate to Computer Science, but I made sure to have a couple internships and participate in hackathons while also trying to have some personal side projects. These will really help you get a job in the field you’re interested in and also give you more hands on experience which you might not get at uni (plus this is the most fun bit).

What advice would you give to students interested in Computer Science?

My advice is to try and get as much experience as possible by doing side projects, joining societies and doing internships. Each of those teaches you something different, and combined, they will make you a very attractive candidate to any firm! In terms of skills, I’d recommend learning some algorithms and data structures, since these will help you with general understanding of some other topics as well as for interviews.
